Highways England (HE) plans to close the junction 10 slip road from the M4 westbound onto the A329M (towards Reading) this weekend (4 to 7 November).

The slip road is due to be closed from 9pm on Friday 4 November, to 6am on Monday 7 November.

The J10 slip road on the opposite side (M4 eastbound) will stay open because it’s part of the diversion route. Traffic westbound will continue to J11, come off and double back onto the M4 eastbound to exit at J10 onto the A329M towards Reading.

The following weekend (11 to 14 November), the junction 10 slip road from the M4 eastbound onto the A329M (towards Wokingham) is due to be closed from 9pm on the Friday to 6am Monday. As with this coming weekend, the J10 slip road on the opposite side will stay open as part of the diversion route.

(Depending on how these two weekend closures go, the slips may also have to be closed the following two weekends; 18 to 21 November and 25 to 28 November. HE says these additional closures will only be used if necessary.)

These closures are part of an £8million Highways England project to reconstruct the bridge foundations for the slip roads crossing over the M4, and to repair the slip roads running beneath the A329M.

HE says the work is due to finish in November 2017, and will take place both day and night, seven days a week, depending on the phase of the scheme.

24-hour narrowed lanes and a reduced speed limit are now in place at the junction on the M4. This affects motorists leaving the M4 at J10 to get onto the A329(M) for Wokingham or Reading.

Although the work is only taking place on the HE network, the diversion includes Wokingham Borough’s A329M, affecting that and surrounding routes.

At certain dates during the next 13 months the slip roads will be closed overnight between 9pm and 6am, and HE says it will publicise these nearer the time as well as display them on signs at the junction.

Weekend closures of the slip roads are also planned says HE – like those 4-7 and 11-14 November - from 9pm Friday to 6am Monday. But it says only one slip road will be closed at a time.

Following the major recent work it carried out at J10, HE says it wants to improve traffic flow through the junction and will do this work by March next year. HE says the aim of this additional work (in addition to the two schemes mentioned above) is to ease rush hour congestion on the A329(M).

While the three parts of this HE scheme are being carried out, Wokingham Borough Council will closely monitor their impact and work with HE to minimise any effects and manage any congestion.

Full details about the scheme and confirmed road closure dates will be on the Highways England new Traffic England website.
