The Adopt a Street Scheme brings together a dedicated network of volunteers throughout the parish, comprising local schools, community groups, businesses, and numerous residents, all united in promoting the anti-litter message.
The Adopt-a-Street initiative inspires local people to take pride in their communities by volunteering to collect litter from their neighbourhood streets and surroundings. Participating in this scheme will not decrease the council’s regular street cleaning, but rather complement and enhance it.
PLEASE NOTE: For health and safety reasons, you must register before we can provide you with litter pickers and bags.
How 'Adopt a Street' Works
Individuals may select an area to “adopt” and choose their preferred times to volunteer. The parish council will provide a litter picking kit, which includes a litter picker, high-visibility jackets, and bags that can be placed with the regular rubbish collection. Additionally, basic written health and safety guidance will be supplied. This initiative offers an excellent opportunity for residents and community groups to participate in maintaining and improving their local environment.
The Adopt-a-Street program serves to reinforce the council’s zero tolerance policy on litter and fosters a strong sense of civic pride among volunteers within their neighbourhoods.

Annual Community Litter Picks
We also run annual community litter pick in conjunction with Wokingham Borough Council who provide the equipment and Keep Britain Tidy. This is a chance for all those that don’t want to regularly litter pick and join in for a one off annual community big tidy up. These events are run and hosted by Shinfield Parish Council who will provide all the necessary equipment and refreshments, but we ask that you bring your own gloves.
Next one 2027
If you didn’t make it to the litter pick, you can still sign up to Adopt a Street Scheme and get involved in your own time! Please email francesca.lane@shinfieldparish.gov.uk
What a load of rubbish! Community comes together for Annual Community Litter Pick 2026
A massive thank you to our Shinfield Parish Community, what an amazing turnout this year!
We had over 50 people get involved, showing real community spirit and unity – just look at that mountain of litter that has been collected from around our parish.
Also, a really big thank you to Shinfield View Care Home for once again supporting this event, the cakes were delightful as always.
If you took any photos, and don’t mind sharing, please send them to info@shinfieldparish.gov.uk
