Community Engagement & Events Officer

Shinfield Parish Council

Salary: £31,537 to £34, 434 (Full time)

Hours: Full-time (37 hours per week)
Location: Shinfield Parish, Berkshire
Reporting to: Chief Executive & Clerk

Shinfield Parish Council is looking for an enthusiastic, creative and community-focused individual to become our new Community Engagement & Events Officer.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a leading role in strengthening community connections across our six villages, increasing resident engagement, developing innovative communications, and delivering a vibrant programme of community events. The role sits at the heart of the Council’s work to build trust, encourage participation and enhance local pride.

About the Role

You will lead the Council’s efforts to engage residents, community groups, businesses, schools and partner organisations. The role includes:

  • Developing new ways to engage residents and encourage participation in local democracy.

  • Helping to grow the Council’s digital communications and social media presence.

  • Supervising the Youth Worker Team

  • Creating engaging content including newsletters, videos, graphics, publicity campaigns and website updates.

  • Planning and delivering community events ranging from the Annual Parish Meeting and Remembrance Sunday to Christmas celebrations and new community initiatives.

  • Working closely with councillors, community groups, schools, sports clubs and local businesses.

  • Producing reports, analysing engagement data and helping shape future community initiatives.

Some evening and weekend work will be required to attend meetings, support events and community activities as required.

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking someone who can combine creativity with excellent organisation and communication skills.

Essential Requirements

  • Experience in community engagement, events, communications or a related field.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience in planning and delivering events.

  • Confidence using social media and digital communication tools.

  • Ability to build positive relationships with a diverse range of people.

  • Strong organisational and project management skills.

  • Experience working with volunteers, community groups or stakeholder organisations.

  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Desirable

  • Experience working in local government, parish/town councils or community development.

  • Video editing or digital content creation skills.

  • Website management experience.

  • Experience working with young people.

  • Ability to analyse community data and produce reports.

Youth Worker (Part-Time)

Salary: £26,403 to £28,598 (pro rata)

Hours: 18.5 hours per week, including some evenings and weekends
Location: Across Shinfield Parish, Berkshire
Reporting to: Community Engagement & Events Officer

Help Make a Difference to Local Young People

Shinfield Parish Council is seeking an enthusiastic, approachable and motivated Youth Worker to help develop and deliver an exciting programme of activities and support for young people (primarily working with teenagers) across the parish.

This is a fantastic opportunity to build positive relationships with young residents, support their personal development, create engaging activities and help ensure young people have a stronger voice within their community.

Whether you already have experience in youth work, community development, education, sport or a related field, we would love to hear from individuals who are passionate about helping young people thrive.

The Role

Working across the parish, you will:

  • Build positive and lasting relationships with young people.

  • Organise and deliver youth activities including drop-in sessions, gaming and esports activities, cinema events, holiday activities and themed events.

  • Provide informal mentoring, guidance and signposting to support services where appropriate.

  • Encourage young people to become involved in volunteering, work experience and community initiatives.

  • Work with schools, sports clubs, community organisations, Thames Valley Police and Wokingham Borough Council to support local young people.

  • Support positive community cohesion and initiatives aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour.

  • Help establish and support a Parish Youth Council, ensuring young people’s voices are heard in local decision-making.

  • Maintain safeguarding records, attendance monitoring and activity documentation.

  • Help identify funding opportunities and support grant applications.

What We’re Looking For

Essential

  • Experience working with young people in a paid or voluntary capacity.

  • Understanding of the challenges and aspirations of young people.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to engage and inspire young people from diverse backgrounds.

  • Awareness of safeguarding, confidentiality and professional boundaries.

  • Flexibility to work evenings and occasional weekends.

Desirable

  • Youth work qualification or willingness to train.

  • Experience delivering sports, physical activities or coaching.

  • Experience with gaming, esports or digital youth engagement.

  • First Aid qualification.

  • Experience working with councils, schools or community organisations.
