We ask that if residents are disposing of broken glass, please ensure it is completely wrapped to keep everyone safe. This should be sealed in a box or wrapped in several sheets of newspaper to prevent our waste collectors being put at risk. Broken glass should not be taken to the bottle bank, which is for glass bottles and jars only. Get more information on glass recycling, including search for your nearest bottle bank, on the recycling banks webpages . Send us your black box reuse ideas The rollout of the borough’s waterproof recycling bags was completed in June and we’re encouraging as many residents as possible to find a new use for their old black boxes. Residents are already using them for a number of practical uses at home and in the garden which include: • Storage for items in the shed/garage/loft • As a planter in the garden for growing vegetables • Growing flowers in it • Storing glass to take to the bottle bank • Donating to a neighbour, friend, school or other organisation who wants it Our residents continue to send us pictures of plants thriving whilst being grown in their black boxes. We’d love to see how you’ve used your black boxes, so if you have flourishing flowers, vibrant veggies or housing hedgehogs, send us your pictures to CEM@wokingham.gov.uk Fly-tipping update Council and the police catch unregistered waste carriers Our localities officers teamed up with Thames Valley Police to conduct stop checks on vehicles carrying waste last month. We are taking a phased approach to relaxation of the rules alongside our partners re3 and our priority is to ensure that everyone has a safe visit to the site. The booking system has proved to be a very efficient tool in keeping us all Covid-secure but also brought a number of other benefits. This includes: a higher recycling rate, being more efficient with our journeys and reduced queues, leading to less idling cars on the approaching roads and playing a part in reducing our impact on the environment. Currently, a range of trials are taking place to helps assess the future of the booking system. As part of it, slots are being gradually increased to make the service even more efficient but still safe for everyone. For more information or to book a slot for the click & tip service, visit the re3 webpage. |
