  Double results days this week. Congratulations to all the students across the borough who have or will be collecting their GCSE and A-Level results this week. You can see our Twitter thread celebrating yesterday’s A-Level results from schools across the area. GCSE results will be handed out tomorrow (12 August). Due to Covid-19, for a second year running, results are based on teacher assessments rather than by examination results. The council’s Elevate service provides information, advice and guidance to 16 to 18 year olds (and up to 24 with SEND). This support covers job hunting, education, apprenticeships, career planning, training opportunities, work experience and volunteering. The team are offering on the day support for students, which can be accessed by phone at 07710 117650 or email elevate@wokingham.gov.uk. Elevate will also be running Next Steps Clinics from 5 to 7pm for young people and their parents/carers on 18 and 25 August and 1 September, which can be booked by emailing elevate@wokingham.gov.uk You can find out about local and virtual emotional and wellbeing support on our young people’s wellbeing webpages.  Tackling inequality together We’ve published our Equality Profile for 2021. As part of the overarching Equality Plan 2021-25, which was agreed by the council earlier this year, the profile summarises what the council knows about its communities, according to the nine characteristics named in the Equality Act 2010. The nine protected characteristics are: age, disability, marriage and civil partnerships, pregnancy and maternity, ethnicity, religion or belief, sex, gender reassignment, and sexual orientation. As well as the protected characteristics, we also consider other factors such as children and the impact of Covid-19. We are very aware that people have multiple or overlapping characteristics which when combined can lead to increased or specific discrimination or disadvantage. We want to lead the way and stop people from being treated unfairly and believe that by sharing more information about what we know about the people who live in the borough, we will achieve this ambition. Be cautious when disposing of glass A member of the Veolia waste collection team was injured and taken to hospital in an ambulance this week due to broken glass being deposited in the blue waste bags without being properly wrapped. You can see images on our Facebook page. We ask that if residents are disposing of broken glass, please ensure it is completely wrapped to keep everyone safe. This should be sealed in a box or wrapped in several sheets of newspaper to prevent our waste collectors being put at risk. Broken glass should not be taken to the bottle bank, which is for glass bottles and jars only. Main structure goes up at Carnival hub Progress on the new Carnival hub in Wokingham continues, with the main exterior structure now in place. You can see the latest video of the structure going up on Facebook or YouTube. The facility is set to open next year. The complex will feature two swimming pools, a large fitness suite, a specialist group cycling studio, a theatre with high-quality acoustics and lighting, a four-court sports hall and a long-term health gym, as well as a spa. We are currently consulting on the new library facilities until 29 August – give your view via our consultation webpages.  Perfect accessory for the summer The Wocca Arts and Culture app is proving the perfect accessory for your summer and to keep up to date with what’s going on in the borough. Whether you’re interested in seeing what’s going on in your local library, discovering a new music festival, tracking down an outdoor cinema screening, or finding out about local art classes so you can learn a new skill, there’s something for all ages and groups to enjoy. It aims to raise the profile of arts and culture across the borough and to give local event organisers the opportunity to showcase some of the fantastic free and paid activities going on throughout the year. The app also includes a fun family game called Wocca Explorers, which encourages families to get out and discover more about the area, tracking down markers at different locations in the borough before finding out fun facts and playing interactive games.
